Brad Russell has been playing guitar since
about 1975, but not seriously until about 1980 or 1981. He's been intrigued
by music all his life.
“My mom has comments in my baby book about how
I could sing complex classical melodies early on,” he said. “I
loved the sound of blues players like Johnny Winter and this is what
got me inspired to play guitar, but am very moved by classical music,
jazz, progressive rock, etc.”
He says his guitar Influences include Larry Carlton,
Johnny Winter, Mark Farner, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Steve
Hackett, K.K Downing, Glenn Tipton, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Scott
Gorham, Eddie Van Halen, Allan Holdsworth, Joaquin Lievano, Ritchie
Blackmore, Randy Bachman and David Gilmour; and more.
Brad credits his band influences to Steely Dan, Aerosmith,
Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Pink Floyd, Yes, Led Leppelin, Genesis
and Stone Temple Pilots
“My goal is to make the best music I can make,
whether playing covers or writing and playing original music,”
he said. “I try and come up with a compromise between playing
what I like and what an audience will like. There has to be a balance
between both or you go stale. Songs should have substance from BOTH
a musical and spiritual standpoint, or they don't work for me. As far
as ability goes, all the hard work has paid off.”
Brad and his brother Craig prefer playing their own
music, but do love playing covers as an extra source of enjoyment and
because they can.
